Rare Rafflesia Rediscovery Sparks Tears and Scientific Breakthrough in Sumatra

SUMPUR KUDUS, West Sumatra — On the night of Nov. 19, 2025, a former elementary school gym teacher collapsed to his knees in the mud, sobbing. After 13 years of fruitless searches, false leads and near-misses across the Indonesian archipelago, Septian “Deki” Andriki finally found what he had been hunting: a blooming Rafflesia hasseltii, a parasitic flower so elusive it had not been confirmed in the wild for more than a decade.

Andriki, now a self-taught rafflesia hunter, had followed a local tip into the dense, tiger-inhabited rainforest of Sijunjung Regency. He was accompanied by Chris Thorogood of Oxford Botanic Garden and Joko Ridho Witono of Indonesia’s National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). After a nearly day-long trek, the team spotted a bud unfurling its blood-red, white-speckled petals. “After 13 years, a 23-hour journey, risking tiger attacks, nearly dead phone batteries, I couldn’t talk,” Andriki told the group. “I just cried.”

Footage of the grown man weeping before the flower went viral worldwide, but the moment carried serious scientific weight. R. hasseltii is one of roughly 42 recognized species in the genus Rafflesia, plants that lack leaves, stems and roots, living invisibly inside host vines for years before bursting into brief, foul-smelling blooms that can span nearly a meter. The rediscovery, part of a multinational effort led by the University of Oxford and involving scientists from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, marks a conservation milestone as much as a taxonomic one. Roughly two-thirds of known hasseltii populations exist outside protected forests, exposed to logging and land conversion. Researchers are now collecting DNA from a dozen rafflesia variants to map the genus’s evolution, hoping to understand its rare and unpredictable blooming.

A Quiet Machine of Discovery

The Sumatran find is the most dramatic example of a far larger enterprise: the steady, unglamorous work of discovering and naming new plant species. At the Missouri Botanical Garden, scientists describe roughly 200 new species each year — about one in ten of all new plant species named globally. In 2025, the Garden highlighted ten standout finds, including a Costa Rican cactus that took two decades to flower, an endangered sapodilla relative from Madagascar, and a new persimmon species named for a late botanist.

The Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History published nine new species, three new genera and one new subgenus in 2025. Among the most striking was Rojovitis, a new subgenus of Vitis — the genus that includes cultivated grapes — built around two threatened wild grape species from Chiapas, Mexico, distinguished by red flowers and porous stems. It is only the third recognized grape subgenus in nearly a century.

Not all discoveries required deep wilderness. In Texas’s Big Bend National Park, volunteer botanist Deb Manley photographed fuzzy maroon flowers she had never seen, uploading the images to the citizen-science platform iNaturalist. The chain of identification led to an entirely new genus, nicknamed the “wooly devil” — the first new plant genus documented in a U.S. national park since 1976.

In Hawaii, researchers used a drone fitted with a robotic collecting arm to reach an inaccessible cliff on Kauai. The drone returned samples of a previously unknown carnation-family plant, Schiedea waiahuluensis — likely the first new plant species discovered by drone. The mission also collected an unidentified insect that may prove to be a new species.

Racing the Clock

These discoveries tell a dual story: one of persistence and luck, the other of urgency. Many newly named plants are already among the rarest organisms on Earth, restricted to a single mountain range or cliff face and threatened by habitat loss. As botanists at the Missouri Botanical Garden and Smithsonian argue, naming a species is the necessary first step before any legal protection or conservation funding can be applied. A plant without a name has no defense.

Scientists estimate that thousands of plant species remain undescribed, many declining toward extinction before formal recognition — a phenomenon known as “dark extinction.” Each year’s tally of new species is not merely an inventory of nature’s surprises. It is a race against time, run one flowering cactus, one drone flight, one tear-streaked jungle trek at a time.
